The atheist Edward Abbey might be compared with Thomas Markham, the uncle of Sir John Harington. Harington asks one of his uncle's companions "whether [Markham] were religious or no, and namely if he used to pray; he told me, that to his remembrance he never heard him ask any thing of God, nor thanke God for any thing; except it were once at a Jakes, he heard him say, he thanked God, he had had a good stoole."
